In college, one of my frat brother's father was a Harbor Pilot on the Houston Ship Channel. I used to go over the Houston and spend the night with Cap'n Bob and his wife, and go out on the Channel with him as he brought ships out to the Gulf from Houston. Fascinating, especially at 3am on a foggy, rainy night.
Here's a compilation of photos as a time lapse of moving a ship from the Channel out to the Gulf. "500 knots on the Houston Ship Channel". Very cool.
Here's to Cap'n Bob (RIP) and son Wiley Robert (sadly, also RIP).
