Classy Example of Reporting -- and Keeping your Word

Here's a comment from NRO today.

Re: Larry Kudlow [Ramesh Ponnuru]

The discussion lasted about an hour and a half. The official transcript of the on-the-record portion of it was 325 words long. We are allowed, however, to report on the atmospherics. So I can say that the president was at times combative, refused to get drawn very far into this year's races, does not at all seem worn down or defeated, and was very candid—and that I wish I could say more.

My point is that Kudlow shows a rare and honorable trait. He gave his word to the President that some comments would be "off the record"...and he kept his word.

How many of the NYTimes or WAPost lefties can we say this of? Not many...

Saudi King: Screw You, Pay Up

I've been thinking about a post to explain Economics 101 to newsmen and women regarding oil prices. This news post on FoxNews.com put me over the top.

Saudi King: Get Used to High Oil Prices

Tuesday, July 01, 2008

Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah told oil consumers Tuesday that they should get used to high prices and not blame the country for the spike in the price of crude, the Agence France-Presse news agency reported.

"Consumer countries have to adapt to the prices and the mechanisms of the market," the king said in an interview published Tuesday in Kuwaiti daily Al-Siyassah.

Abdullah's comments came as the price of oil jumped past $143 a barrel for the first time.

The king contends that speculators are to blame for the rising costs, a claim that has been denied by the International Energy Agency, AFP reported.

"Often it is a case of political expediency to find a scapegoat for higher prices rather than undertake serious analysis or perhaps confront difficult decisions," the IEA told AFP.

OK, here's Econ 101.

Oil prices are NOT being driven up by speculators. Oil prices are high for one reason: OPEC. OPEC is a cartel. In the USA, cartels are illegal (well, except for MLB and the NFL and...) So when traders on the exchanges bid on oil, there is one major supplier with the same price. OPEC sets prices for ALL of its members, and sets production quotas for members. Together, OPEC members produce about 40% of the world's oil supply. This means that, if I agree to pay $130 for a barrel of oil, all OPEC members sell at this price. I can't get a separate bid from Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq, Venezuela, etc. In the past, some of the OPEC members would "cheat" on their production quotas, but they were punished by other OPEC members.

If there was truly a free market in oil, I could go to the market and get a price from all of the different nations that produce oil. If the current price was $130, I could probably find someone who would offer it at $129. That, in turn, would start a bidding war (downward), resulting in a lower price. The price would stabilize when the last barrel of oil available was sold to the last bidder. This usually results in a price that reflects costs + a reasonable profit margin.

Today, if I offer $129 for oil that's selling at $130, none of the OPEC countries are allowed to sell to me at $129. Since they control such a high percentage of oil output, those suppliers that are not members of OPEC have no incentive to sell at any price lower than the "set" price, or OPEC price. They'll get the OPEC price.

To call this "an open market", "a free market'', or "the mechanisms of the market" is a bunch of baloney.

Solution: We should tell all OPEC countries that we will bomb the next OPEC meeting, killing all oil ministers. We will then assassinate all future oil ministers and bomb OPEC meetings until they dissolve OPEC. You think I'm kidding? Well-placed smart-bombs in the camel tents of a few Saudi and Iranian goat-lovers would cause them to get our religion quickly. I'm deadly serious. These SOB's hide behind statements like the one above, taking billions from us, and then tell us it's our fault. I've had enough of this garbage.

The price to drill and recover oil in the middle east is somewhere less than $20/barrel. I would pay $40/bbl for this oil. They'd still be zillionaires, but we would be a lot better off.

Oh, by the way, lest you think I'm kidding, my REAL proposal is to nuke the mideast, take it over, and sell it to the highest bidder (Exxon and Shell would pay reasonable prices for oil leases there). As my brother would say, "What are all of those arabs doing camped out above our oil?"

Puppies and Muslims

There's a big flap going on in Scotland regarding a puppy, a postcard, and Muslims. First, the offending puppy:

This postcard was used to let folks know there's a new number to call for police info. The idea, obviously, was that you'd get the card, see the cute puppy, and read the info. Simple Marketing 101.

Geez, it seems that the poor Muslims consider dogs "unclean". Now they are offended. Poor them. IT'S A PUPPY, DAMN IT!

There is no freaking way that the Tayside police should submit to this absolute b.s. I will personally print up copies of these cards and mail them myself. Just give me a few hundred addresses in Tayside, and off they go.

Political correctness is one thing; but this goes way too far. You want unclean? Come see Yellow Dog after he jumps in the pond at the farm, you morons.

Read about it here.

Obama: "Oh, THAT Declaration of Independence"

John H over at Power Line nails Obama. In a speech today, Obama said this:
I remember, when living for four years in Indonesia as a child, I listened to my mother reading me the first lines of the Declaration of Independence, "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they're endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness."

John takes a great shot:

I would have thought that pretty much everyone--certainly every Presidential speechwriter, and every Harvard Law School graduate!--knows that these are not the "first lines" of the Declaration, which begins, "When in the course of human events...." What, exactly, accounts for the fact that Obama is not a laughingstock?

Good ole Mrs. Upchurch in 6th grade would have flunked me if I made that kind of stupid mistake. Click the link below and read the rest of the stupidity that is Obama.

Color Of Change.org needs...spellchecker

Here's a pic that BlueAmerica.org and colorofchange.org are using to try to get the Telecom Amnesty Bill (my name, not theirs) tossed. Personally, I have given the FBI, NSA, CIA, etc, permission to listen to my calls all they want.

But these morons want to sue AT&T, Verizon et al for answering the call from their country to assist in tracking terrorists. The government has given these companies immunity from lawsuits precisely because they HELPED OUT.

Funny thing, though. You'd think that if colorofchange.org wanted people to go to their website, they would spell it correctly. Look closely at the bottom of the pic...they misspelled their own website.

Now THAT'S moonbattery for ya.

That tears it...Obama's officially a dumb-ass

Today the Obamination said patriotism is "a gut instinct".

"I will never question the patriotism of others in this campaign. And I will not stand idly by when I hear others question mine."

Ok bro...bring your ass to Wisconsin. I question your patriotism, you Islam-loving, non-flag-pin-wearing, defeatist, military-hating, cracker-busting fool.
Just so the Secret Service doesn't get mad at me...I'm not threatening him. I'm questioning his patriotism. But I will not stand idly by when he insults me.

Freaking jerk.

Eleanor Clift, Moonbat extraordinaire

I don't watch The McLaughlin Group much anymore, mostly because it's now just a shouting match to see if Clift or Pat Buchanan can shout louder.

I was watching the podcast of the June 20 show, and good ole lefty Clift gave this thoroughly fair and unbiased observation about the 2000 election.

"Al Gore should not have been defeated by George 'Know-nothing' Bush..."

'Scuse me while I pound the table. I have the most respect for someone who believes differently than I do and can come up with a convincing argument on why I should see things his way. But to try and make a point by saying this kind of crap? She'd be kicked off of the Middle School Debate Team for this kind of b.s. This speaks volumes about the intelligence of the Newsweek readership.

What's scary is that there are enough moonbats out there to support Clift at Newsweek and on her screaming meemies show. Her voice is like fingernails on a chalkboard.

EU Parliament Featherbedding

In the US, featherbedding is when a union creates jobs that are nonproductive, and typically guarantees those jobs through the union contract with the employer.

Featherbedding is illegal, but is also tacitly accepted, mostly to keep the union on the job and the workplace free from strikes or work slowdowns.

Seems the EU has a little featherbedding of its own going on. Here's a great video making its way around the blogosphere.

EU Parliament members are paid a crazy-high salary, plus a daily wage for showing up at the Parliament building. It seems like Friday morning is a busy time there. See, the EU Parliamentarians have to physically sign into a log in order to be paid the daily rate. So Friday morning at 7am, a bunch of them show up, sign the ledger, and head out of town, typically for home.

This is clearly theft -- and we'd shame these bozos out of office if they were in the US. But no -- this is the European Union. When reporters confront some of them, the EU reps run, hide, or call the reporters "impertinent".

I love Europe, but only to visit. Living (and paying taxes) in Socialism ain't my thing.

License Plates...Against the Law?

I have a good friend who lives in Denver. He was my neighbor there, and in the less than a year that we lived there, he and his family became very close to us. We don't see them often, but we're friends that don't have to see each other all of the time to remain close.

OK, so you know I'm not going mushy here, the reason I bring this up is, he sent me a picture of his new license plates. He's a former Army Ranger, and a finer father you won't find (well, COB is there, too). He's now proud of these new plates...and he should be.

Beware...South Carolina is up against a lawsuit challenging the legality of their Christian Vanity Plates. COB, before moving to SC, better get those Texas plates updated. How long before the moonbats in Boulder sue Colorado to remove these plates? Freaking commies (see previous post).

The university said Snow's doctors have told him he cannot travel, and that Snow will be replaced by the president's brother, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, at Thursday's fundraising dinner for the Ashbrook Scholar program.

Eloquence on Memorial Day

Head on over to Lex's place and read what MG Kelly has to say about 2 brave Marines, and all of our citizens in uniform. An excerpt:

"Given the opportunity to do another 9/11, our vicious enemy would do it today, tomorrow and everyday thereafter. I don’t know why they hate us, and I frankly don’t care and they can all go to hell, but they do hate us and are driven irrationally to our destruction. The best way to fight them is somewhere else and that is why we are here. For whatever reason they want to destroy our way of life our countrymen at home should be on their knees everyday thanking God we still have enough young people in America today willing to take up the fight as our Veterans did from the earliest days of our nation."

Go, read it all. And be damned glad we have these Marines protecting us.

Respect (and DEFEND) the Uniform

OK, Uncle J over at Blackfive has a good post about a crappy subject...some members of our Armed Forces are being verbally assaulted in DC and elsewhere.

I travel frequently to DFW, DCA, MSP, and ATL. These are all major transit points for troops coming in/going out of the US. I go out of my way to say "thank you" to those I see in uniform (see my previous post).

I swear to GOD, if I ever see or hear this kind of crap, I will pummel the hippy bastard before the soldier has a chance to. I once took a hippy by the scruff of the neck at DFW up to a SSG and made the hippy apologize for a patch on his backpack that said "Soldiers are Murderers".

By God, we all should make a pact...tell the hippy to shut it, or shut it for him. Best Graduation Address

Amen on this. Bill McGurn said this at Benedictine College:

"...And whatever their field of endeavor, I believe all would agree with me about three propositions that are easily forgotten and only painfully re-learned.

First, who you marry is far more important than what career you choose. Over the course of a life that has taken me across three continents, I have met many accomplished men and women. And I have always been astonished by the number who give more thought to choosing the job they may hold for a couple of years than to choosing the spouse to whom they will pledge – before God and their friends – to remain with until death they do part.

Second, no professional achievement – no matter how extraordinary – can match the thrill of seeing the absolute love and confidence reflected in the trusting eyes of a child who calls you Mom or Dad.

Finally, you will not find lasting happiness by pursuing it. Happiness is the byproduct of a contented life. And the surest path to a contented life is to put the needs of others before your own."

Truer words are not to be found. I suggest we all email these words to our schools and ask that they be given to each graduate.

Not Drunk; Stupid in Michigan

Over in Livonia, MI, the Nazi administration at Stevenson High can't take a joke. The kids wore this shirt:

You know, making fun of the definition of driving drunk. Now they're suspended. Get a freaking life.

By the way, if you're old enough to tote a gun in defense of your country, you ought to be able to drink beer. The drinking age was 18 when I was growing up, and we're not dain bramaged.

Of course, MADD missed the point. Here's what they said:

"The goal is to prevent underage drinking, so there is zero tolerance," MADD member N'echole McClendon told MyFOX Detroit. "So for them to say that it's appropriate to drink and drive -- it's not. It's illegal for them to even consume alcohol."

Gee, N'echole, that shirt doesn't say they want to drive drunk; they're just having a little fun. Did you have your sense of humor removed and replaced with an oddly-spelled name?

I remember wearing a t-shirt in college that said:

DAMM -- Drunks Against MADD Mothers.

Sometimes I think the best thing about Barack Obama is that little empty space on his lapel. Media Lies, Truth Dies

The Kenosha News is no fan of supply-side economics. They are much too lefty for that. But you'd think they'd want to stick to printing the truth, wouldn't you? Maybe not...
News flash for the News...the USA is NOT in a recession. There's an economic slowdown, to be sure. But recession? Well, we won't know for 4 more months. Q4 of 2007 was positive growth...it was only 0.6%, but that's growth. The GDP for Q1 will be released this Wednesday. IF -- and it's a big IF -- growth was negative, then we STILL won't be in recession until we see the Q2 numbers in July.

In case you missed it in Economics class, a recession is defined as 2 consecutive quarters of 'negative growth'. That negative growth means that the economy would CONTRACT during a recession. Hasn't happened yet, folks.

One more reason why there is declining interest in the news...at least as the NEWS reports it.

Hillary's Dr Strangelove moment

Those that have read this blog have seen this logo before. Now Hillary's trying to get on my good side. When asked what she'd do if Iran nuked Israel, Hillary said:

“I want the Iranians to know that if I’m the president we will attack Iran,” Clinton said. “In the next ten years, during which they might foolishly consider launching an attack on Israel, we would be able to totally obliterate them.” Hillary Clinton.

Yeah, right.

Here's what you say if you're a wee bit more mature and believable:

"The United States fully supports Israel, and would consider an attack on Israel as an attack on the United States of America. We will keep all options on the table, including the nuclear option, to protect the people and territory of the United States and of Israel." Texan in Wisconsin in the White House (you wish).

George Strait and Alicia Keys

Now, you're wondering how I'm going to tie these two together, right? Did you see the story on Foxnews.com about her?

NEW YORK — There's another side to Alicia Keys: conspiracy theorist.

The Grammy-winning singer-songwriter tells Blender magazine: "'Gangsta rap' was a ploy to convince black people to kill each other. 'Gangsta rap' didn't exist."

So if "gangsta rap" was invented by the government so that blacks would kill each other, then Country Music was invented to get girls pregnant to create more white people.

I mean, puh-leez!

George Strait is therefore responsible for more babies being born than Ice Cube is for kids being killed.

Did you follow that logic? Gooder than hers, eh?

Ptui.

H/T Fox News.com

UPDATE: Here's a statement from Keys on FOXNEWS.COM today (4/16/08):

"My comments about `gangsta rap' were in no way trying to suggest that the government is responsible for creating this genre of rap music," Keys said in a statement issued by J Records. "The point that I was trying to make was that the term was oversloganized by some of the media causing reactions that were not always positive. Many of the `gangsta rap' lyrics articulate the problems of the artists' experiences and I think all of us, including our leaders, could be doing more to address these problems including drugs, gang violence, crime, and other related social issues."

"Oversloganized"? Yeah, that's a rap term. I'm not buying it, but at least she's trying to get out ahead of this. If only Barack had hired her PR firm, he might be out from under the Rev Wright problem.

Obama lama ding-dong, baby

Great video from The Weekly Standard showing Obama denying that he said McCain wanted continue the war in Iraq for 100 years. TWS nailed him with YouTube. Watch the dope.

You know, it's hard to be a candidate for change when you're trying to sling bullshit all over the opponent. The good news is that the fan blew the manure right back in his face.

Absolut Bullshit

Are you freaking kidding me?
Could you imagine the outcry if this map showed Mexico as part of the US?

I don't like Absolut anyway, but you can be dammed sure I'll ask others not to drink it.

UPDATE: Check these out...they make my point nicely.
